5 Sweet Destinations to Check out in 2020

With 2019 winding down, it’s time to start thinking about 2020. So, how are you planning to make next year better than the last? What are you looking forward to?

For many people, 2020 will be about new experiences – getting outside of our comfort zones, trying something new, and using next year as an opportunity to grow.

One of the most popular plans people have made for themselves is to travel. It can be a great opportunity to get out of typical routines and shake things up. And if planned well, it can be the perfect chance to spend some high-quality time with friends and family.

While taking time for your annual camping trip or traveling to visit some family is fun and relaxing, it might be time to add something different into the mix.

You’ve probably had a friend who came back from a two-week trip abroad, claiming that it changed their life. They probably mentioned something about feeling ready to take on the world with a new perspective on who they are and who they want to be.

Many people find traveling to a new city or country reinvigorating. There’s just something about being submerged in a new environment and culture that opens people’s eyes.

If you’ve spent enough time living in the same city, it can be hard to imagine any other way of life. Many habits might’ve become so normalized that it’s easy to assume that people all around the world have similar thoughts and feelings.

But you’d be surprised at how different the world is, and this is something almost indescribable. At the end of the day, it’s something you have to experience for yourself.

Even if you know that people in faraway countries, and even just in different states, can have such divergent lifestyles, it’s difficult to grasp the gravity of these differences without seeing it for yourself.

But how do you plan a trip that you’ll come back from feeling like a new person? Where should you go to experience something new?

While the whole world is full of cultures to experience, people to meet, and food to try, here are five destinations that are sure to make for an unforgettable trip:

1. Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is a beautiful international city. Home of some of the best museums, an eclectic art scene, mouthwatering food, and a world-famous skyline, Chicago is the perfect urban getaway.

Traveling to Chicago is a great option, especially if you’re looking for some family fun. It has everything for all ages and people of all interests.

But if you’re looking for specific attractions, one of Chicago’s best experiences, for both locals and visitors alike, is the Navy Pier.

Located on the waterfront of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier has beautiful gardens, performances, and classic, Chicago-style food. According to Cool Things Chicago, the pier is not only a lot of fun, but it also has a rich history

Navy Pier was built in the early 1900s as a naval hub. But as the years went by, it slowly evolved into a place of entertainment. It became home to all sorts of exhibitions, shows, activities, and concerts that were adored by both kids and adults, transforming the pier into a regular hot spot for family fun.

However, this changed again when World War II hit, and it reverted to its formal naval usage. By the end of the war and through the years after, it had undergone a series of damages and was even declared a landmark in 1977. It wasn’t until the 1990s when the pier regained its spirit, getting put back on track to become what it is today.

2. Kalahari Desert, Southern Africa
Featured in National Geographic’s top 2020 travel destinations, the Kalahari Desert is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, meaning that it’s the perfect place to find yourself in awe at the beauty of the night sky. Going to the Kalahari Desert will show you what was right above your head the whole time but was masked by the air and light pollution of the urban jungle.

It’s a truly life-changing place to be because the desert’s natural beauty captures so much of what the world misses out on. The brightness of the stars truly have their place to shine out here, and it’s a shame that most of the world can’t enjoy their beauty every single day.

It puts a lot into perspective when you look up and realize that not only were the stars there all along but even in TV shows and on night-hikes up your nearby mountain, nothing else could’ve really captured their true form.

3. Las Vegas, Nevada
According to Vegas for All, there’s a lot more to Las Vegas than the glamor and glitz of the strip. Within driving distance are beautiful national parks that’ll let you forget about your daily responsibilities and 9-5 job, and instead let you just be one with nature.

Death Valley may sound scary, but it’s one of the most unique and gorgeous places to plan your next adventure. Like the Kalahari Desert, Death Valley is another International Dark Sky Sanctuary. So if you can’t make it all the way out to Southern Africa, Death Valley might be the perfect place to be.

On the way to Death Valley, you can also take the scenic route through the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which will make the journey there another part of the adventure.

So, if you planned a trip to hit up the casinos in Las Vegas, think about extending your trip a day or two and head out into Death Valley for a truly memorable experience.

4. Porto, Portugal
Porto is a coastal city in the northwest region of Portugal. While not as popular as Portugal’s more famous city, Lisbon, Porto was featured in Forbes’ list of the 20 best places to visit in 2020.

Porto is known to be more affordable than Lisbon, making it a great place to visit if you’re on a budget. The charm of its cobblestone streets and old, Spanish-style architecture will leave a lasting impression.

In Porto, you can spend a day at one of its many beaches, visit the Livraria Lello, the bookstore that inspired Hogwarts, and enjoy Porto’s nightlife at one of its popular bars.

5. South Island, New Zealand
As mentioned in the U.S. News & World Report, South Island, New Zealand is one of the top destinations for outdoors lovers. You can go bungee jumping, paragliding, skydiving, and basically do most, if not all, of the things on your bucket list.

South Island is one of the two major islands in New Zealand. It is home to many national parks that are just waiting to be explored. The sceneries and diversity among South Island’s nature make it the perfect place to get the most out of a single trip.

If you’re traveling with some less outdoorsy people, South Island also has a full art scene, filled with the creativity of South Island locals and quaint cafes that’ll make you feel like it’s a second home. South Island also features Larnach Castle, which was built in 1871, where you can attend the 3 PM tea.

Between these five destinations, there is something for everyone. So, if you’re looking for a life-changing experience in 2020, these cities are sure to give you something unforgettable.

From traveling within the states to hopping on a plane to the other side of the world, these destinations provide exciting trips to the city, breathtaking views of nature, and charming immersive experiences into new cultures. While there are many more places to explore, these five are some of the most highly endorsed and won’t disappoint!
