416 Fire

The fire, known as the 416 fire, in southwest Colorado had burned nearly 17,000 acres (6,880 hectares) by Sunday afternoon, an area larger than Manhattan. More than 800 firefighters were battling the blaze located north of Durango, which was 10 percent contained, the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team said.

The fire had burned about 9,000 acres (3,640 hectares) by early on Saturday, according to an aerial survey.

Residents of a total of 2,156 homes have been ordered to evacuate as of Sunday afternoon, La Plata County spokeswoman Megan Graham told The Durango Herald.

“After these evacuations, we know we’re in this for the long haul,” La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt said Saturday night, according to a Durango Herald reporter.

Images on social media showed large plumes of smoke disseminating above mountains against a backdrop of blue sky.

Incident commander Todd Pechota told evacuated residents Saturday that the situation is “going to get worse before it gets better,” the Herald reported.

The National Weather Service has placed large portions of the so-called “Four Corners” region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona under a red flag warning of extreme fire danger due to the dry conditions.

Unfortunately, 416 fire is not the only such incident in the Colorado state. The most destructive fire in Colorado state history happened in 2016 and was called Black Forest Fire. The 14,280 acre fire destroyed 511 homes and left 28 homes partially damaged. After the investigating held by ATF and state officials, the cause of the blaze that took lives of two people was determined as natural.

The second largest fire in Colorado history by area was also in 2013. West Fork Fire Complex was a complex of wildfires caused by the lightning damaged 110,405 acres.
