The superhero film – based on the Marvel Comics X-Men characters – finds her character Jean Grey receiving transformative telepathic powers.

It’s Turner’s first major role since the end of Game of Thrones, where she played Sansa Stark.

It’s been confirmed that Jessica Chastain will be playing the central villain in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but in a move that seriously increases our curiosity, the folks behind the film will not identify her character. It has been said that she is an “otherworldly shapeshifter” who is out to control the power of the Phoenix.

In X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Jessica Chastain will make her comic book movie debut. In this initial outing, the actress takes on a mysterious villain role, arriving on Earth from the cosmos of the Fox-Marvel universe and wreaking havoc on anyone who opposes her.

She can be Charles Xavier’s sister

However, fans are betting at 5/4 odds she’s actually playing Cassandra Nova, an iconic X-Men villain who may use Jean Grey’s newfound Phoenix powers to destroy her brother (Charles Xavier) and all mutantkind.

Chastain avoided dropping any spoilers or specifically naming what race of Marvel Comics species from which she hails, though in the movie she is making an effort to help the D’Bari Empire.

“Well, I was sent the script immediately, so it was pretty clear, she was otherworldly,” Chastain explained. “Basically I’m there to encourage Jean to be her full self and that includes the darkness. I was like, I was saying something, I was like the little devil whispering in her ear, on her shoulder.”

Chastain’s character is a Skrull?

Chastain’s villain and those alien creatures surround her show off abilities similar to that of Skrulls, though the term is never used in the film.

It is possible the description of the villain’s race was removed when the ending of Dark Phoenix was radically changed to avoid having similarities to another superhero film which came before it, with Captain Marvel being the prime suspect in beating the X-Men movie to the Skrull villain punch.

Chastain also revealed the inspiration behind her take on the Dark Phoenix “alien”, explaining that Tilda Swinton is her muse for anything out-of-this-world. A solid choice.

“I am a shapeshifter, so I am supposed to look like an elevated form of a human being,” Jessica said. “The one person I think of that way is Tilda Swinton. I’m not convinced she’s a human being. I think she is ruling over some planet somewhere like the goddess she is.”
