3D-printing made a huge breakthrough in “plastic surgery”: five kids got the new ears from their own cells grown in a 3D-printed mold.

3D-printed cure for microtia

Microtia is a condition when kids are born with one underdeveloped ear. They cannot hear in one ear, but the other one works perfectly.

Microtia can also affect both of the newborn’s ears. Most often, patients with microtia are prescribed silicone implants or external dentures.

A group of Chinese scientists and doctors helped children with microtia using 3D-bioprinting technologies. Five kids between the ages of six and nine were chosen for an experiment.

New ears for transplant were grown from patients’ own cells. The shape of the ear was created for each child individually using 3D modeling.

The images were made using computed tomography. Based on the models,  silicone molds were prepared for the biodegradable material.

All these substances are able to decay in the body as they are used in medicine as the basis for implants.

The base was covered with cells, taken from healthy ears of patients by biopsy. Each ear had been grown for about three months, then they were grafted onto the children.

The first operation was 2.5 years ago – a girl who received a new ear did not report any complaints.

Other patients also show no signs of organ rejection.  But if it grows too much, it’ll create a cancerous mass.

Researchers plan to monitor the state of children for the next five years. By this time, the process of decomposition of the artificial base will end.

It will be possible to make definitive conclusions about how successful the technique turned out to be.
