The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most well known annual Thoroughbred horse race. The history of the Melbourne Cup began in 1861, when settlers from England, who brought their favorite sport to a foreign continent, organized two-mile jumps with a prize fund of 170 pounds and a gold watch (in 1865 the winner was awarded a silver ball).
In the first competition participated only 17 persons. Today, the prize is more than 5 million Australian dollars plus cash trophies, and the day of races (the first Tuesday of November) has been officially recognized as the state weekend of the state since 1877.
Horse racing is held under the auspices of the Victoria Racing Club. Local horses (purebred riding, age from three years), as well as the applicants from other countries, can participate in the contest.
In addition to the actual sporting events, in the days of the Cup, there are a lot of events here: folk festivals, children’s parties, tastings, dances, and fashion shows. For a week, Flemington is the cultural and entertainment center of the country.
